Devon Avenue
Devon Avenue is home to Chicago's ethnically eclectic commercial district that streches between California and Western Avenues. Historically, Devon Avenue has undergone a variety of changes in its 140-year history. First built in the 1850s as Church Road, Devon became the main shopping area for Chicago's Jewish community. Today, an influx of new immigrants has added spice to an already colorful neighborhood. There are over 400,000 South Asians from India and Pakistan in Chicago. Other nations represented in this area include Thailand, Nepal, Afghanistan, Russia, Croatia, Assyria, Iran, Morocco, Bangladesh and Israel. Devon Avenue draws South Asians from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin because of the numerous cloth, gold and Indian video shops, as well as markets and restaurants.
